After early leader Aurelien Quinion of France had dropped off the pace and was then disqualified, Martin shared the lead with Ecuador's Brian Pintado and Japan's Masatora Kawano entering the final 4km. Martin made the break with less than 2km remaining and crossed the line in two hours, 24 minutes and 30 seconds, four seconds before Pintado. Kawano posted a season's best of 2:25:12 to finish third, while defending champion Massimo Stano of Italy was seventh with 2:25:59. "I had this problem with my hamstring after the 20km race and I was still considering whether to start at the 35km but I managed to get through," said Perez, who smashed Garcia Leon's 35 km world record by nearly half a minute in May. "I was fourth in the Olympic Games and it was very tough to get so close to an Olympic medal. It's wonderful now to be a double world champion in Budapest. "I see Maria is first too in the women's race, so today is a great day for Spain." CNN —The road to a marriage proposal can be a long and winding one. Both Dominik Černý and Hana Burzalova were in Budapest, Hungary, competing for their country in the race walking events for men and women at the World Athletics Championships. Černý celebrated with a fist pump to the sky after slipping the ring onto the 22-year-old’s finger. The couple posed for photos shortly afterwards, with Burzalova proudly showing off her new ring for the cameras. They might have not won any medals in their respective race walking events, but both Černý and Burzalova will travel home with a much more meaningful memento.

Like compatriot Alvaro Martin in the men's event on the opening day of the championships on Saturday, Perez pulled away from the chasing pack with around 5km remaining and crossed the finish line in one hour, 26 minutes and 51 seconds. The 27-year-old clinched her first world title after finishing 25 seconds ahead of Montag, with Olympic champion Palmisano third in 1:27:26. Defending champion Kimberly Garcia Leon of Peru finished a further sixth seconds adrift of Palmisano in fourth place. Defending champion Kimberly Garcia Leon of Peru led a breakaway group that at the halfway mark included Perez, Montag, Olympic champion Palmisano and Yang Jiayu of China, the 2017 winner and current world record holder. The 27-year-old finished 25 seconds ahead of Montag and became the first Spanish woman to win the event at the world championships. "I cannot even put into words how important it was to me to win this gold," Perez, the 35km world record holder, said. Perez was disqualified from the 20km walk at last year's worlds as well as the 2022 European Championships, and finished fourth at the Tokyo Games. The men's and women's 35km race walk will take place on Thursday.
